In 2003, he was elected President of the Union of Students in Ireland where he campaigned for greater access to third level opportunities and financial supports for disadvantaged students. While completing his Masters in Education, he spent two years teaching at a underprivileged school in the US. He returned to Ireland where he worked at a DEIS school in Tallaght and, later, with the Irish Probation Services. He currently directs youth services in one of Limerick City's most marginalised communities.
